Abstract: There are few things more American than freedom. Americans are free to say whatever they want, own as many guns as they please, and believe in anything they choose. It is the backbone of the American identity, pushing people to fight against their oppressors for over 250 years. Americans believe they are truly free and that that freedom is a distinct quality of their country. However, regardless of how free the United States may have been, that is not necessarily still true today. Philosophers believe that changes to the American systems and institutions have inhibited the freedom Americans hold dear. These philosophers, and the evidence that supports their claims, demonstrates a corruption that cannot be solved with mere policy.
